The advantage of Water jet over EDM’s

Electrical Discharged Machining (EDM) is an erosion system which makes use of electrical release. This has the capability of cutting up to 12” thickness. This needs separate wiring for separate jobs. However waterjets can cut similar parts like EDM with a much faster speed and is less expensive. It holds tolerance + or – of .003. When compared to EDM, waterjet has the advantage of being faster.

Waterjet machine is more resourceful and can also cut the material that EDM is unable to cut such as wood, glass or plastic etc. Waterjets may to pierce material whereas in case of EDM hole is required to be made in material. Waterjets do not have heat affected zones and there is no thermal distortion that might occur with EDM. Lesser time is required for waterjets to set up. Another advantage which water jet has over EDM is that bigger parts can be made by it.

Waterjets have many advantages and can be used for cutting different material that cannot be cut like aluminum and copper. There is no thermal distortion with waterjets. They are able to cut materials that are heat sensitive. These are environment friendly and on thicker parts they have better tolerance. Check out more about waterjets on semyx.com. The operation of water cutting system is comparatively cheaper. Its maintenance is much simple. Another benefit of water jet is that it provides far better edge finish due to smooth surface. Since there is no heat distortion, properties of material do not change. Waterjets cut with relatively lower temperatures and provide better precision.
